DE BEERS : monopolies are not for ever

G1594(GB)
Résumé
The case describes the unlocking of the diamond industry, from the De Beers monopoly of the 20th century to a much more complex and moving strategic context at the beginning of the 21st century.
The case introduces the global value chain of the diamond industry, documents the rise of the De Beers system, and presents the fall of this system and the strategy implemented by De Beers in order to react to new market conditions.
The case concludes with some questions facing the difficulty of a value migration for a company historically involved in the mining business. Does De Beers master the resources and competences which are required to become a retailer located at the downstream end of the global value chain? Are De Beers main stakeholders ready to accept such an extreme repositioning? A TOWS matrix is used to assess the suitability and acceptability of various strategic options.
Objectifs pédagogiques
Beyond a sector-based approach in an industry with an extremely strong historical lock-in, this case can be used to analyze the difficulty which lies in moving along a global value chain. As a consequence, the case has multiple possible teaching objectives:
- To conduct an industry analysis in order to identify critical success factors.
- To identify the evolution of unique resources and core competences.
- To challenge the ability to implement a vertical integration.
