Wyes : Pioneering Assistive Technology Conception via Jugaad, Ergonomics, and Design

KEDGE-EC-005(GB)
Résumé
Wyes is a biotech start-up. It has invented connected eyewear to harness the eye movements of patients "walled up in their own bodies" to restore their ability to communicate and socialize. Wyes was designed for and with patients. This case study shows how the Wyes First offering was designed around a combination of successive approaches necessary to arrive at a final solution perfectly adapted to the real needs of this disabled and excluded population. It is structured in 2 parts. The first part highlights the search for balance between technologies and the desire to put the patient first, rather than the technology race. It shows how jugaad framed the project, and the need to structure the design process using low-tech ergonomics. The second part focuses on making sense of the Wyes First offer. It shows how these 3 engineers managed to perfect the design by combining 4 design approaches (frugal, inclusive, circular and UX design) so that the offer was perfectly adapted to this specific context and to the real needs of this segment.
Objectifs pédagogiques
The pedagogical objectives of the case are defined from the approach of the design process of the offer of the start-up Wyes:
-      Discover and respond to the real needs and difficulties faced by people with specific disabilities (paralysis): their illness affects their motor skills and therefore their ability to communicate;
-      Learn to analyze a complex situation, generally unknown or known only to the people concerned, which requires a real appropriation of the particularity of the context in order to develop a techno-inclusive device;
-      Understand the need to innovate and mobilize design methods that focus on the patient rather than the technology, even if you do not have full mastery of the latter;
-      Work in a collaborative mode, drawing on collective intelligence and creating an environment conducive to constructive exchange: critical discussion, empathetic attitude, common objective and collective decision-making;
-      Stimulate participants' thinking around the combination of several design approaches, extracting best practices to exceed designers' and users' expectations.
