This case is about the challenges that a company faces in times of corporate crises. The case describes the chocolate manufacturing market in Europe, the Ferrero company, the history of the salmonella poisoning incident at Easter time in 2022, and considers the roles and actions during and post crisis of the company and the health agencies in Europe.
This case study provides context for a detailed examination of company strategies when faced with a crisis event. Students are asked to analyze the stakeholders involved, consider the success of the communication on the issue and to make recommends to a key decision marker on how companies should interact with stakeholders in times of crisis.
The case study intends to address three main pedagogical objectives to achieve the acquisition of new knowledge:
- Make students aware of the connection between companies and diverse stakeholders.
- Explore the power of communication (in times of crisis).
- Identify methods to improve communication with stakeholders.
