The case is made of two parts that are followed by appendices. The focus is on private EHPADs, but the data is also given for public sector and associative actors. It is a sectorial case and not a corporate case focusing on a specific company. The case enables the development of a global comprehension of the dynamics of the sector and of the different strategies used by its main actors. In the first part, data are presented in order to understand the constraints and the opportunities of the sector, which are closely connected to the increased aging population. In the second the different actors in the sector are presented, ranked by size. This allows the identification of the strategies developed by the actors. By using the financial data provided, the actors' financial performance can also be analysed.
This case is a corporate strategy case. It aims to:
1. Apply the methods and tools of sectorial analysis;
2. Bring out the different possible growth modalities (paths and modes) and to search recurrences (strategic groups map);
3. Underline the impact of development choices of the companies in the sector;
4. Illustrate several strategic choices, especially those related to choices between specialisation and diversification;
5. Bring out the connection between:
- The characteristics of the sector, its evolution and the possible strategic choices
- The strategic choices, performance and financial risk of companies and groups in the sector.
