Marguerite Boucicaut began life as an illiterate goose-keeper, and upon her death in 1887 she bequeathed a great fortune to Assistance Publique, which in turn financed charitable works and built the Boucicaut hospital next to Le Bon Marché. The widow of Aristide Boucicaut, who in 1852 founded the first department store, revolutionizing the business world and society, Marguerite Boucicaut worked tirelessly to protect, motivate and support company personnel to ensure the company's sustainability. She is a historically linked to the rise of CSR, and the current managers of Le Bon Marché are committed to keeping her legacy alive.
