Résumé

Feyel-Artzner is a family-owned SME which produces foie gras and fine goose and duck specialities based on traditional production methods. Located near Strasbourg, the company is France's oldest foie gras production company. Its products are sold under two brands: (1) Feyel which is sold in supermarket and hypermarket chains and (2) Artzner which targets restaurant professionals and export markets.

In 2012, Feyel-Artzner achieves total sales of 30 million euros (+19% compared with 2011) and employs 147 people. The export activity, which accounts for 30% of total sales, is a priority growth driver for the company: products are currently sold in 45 countries.

Prepared in close collaboration with the management of Feyel-Artzner, this case-study provides detailed information about the Feyel-Artzner company, its development as well as the characteristics of the foie gras market.

Students are asked to analyse strategic and managerial orientations adopted by this family-owned SME and to elaborate recommendations for the coming years.

Objectifs pédagogiques

To familiarise students with the managerial practices of a family-owned SME.
To make students aware of the elaboration of a development plan for an SME:
- conduct an analysis of the company situation (strengths/weaknesses, opportunities/threats),
- analyse strategic and managerial choices (strategy, organisation, corporate culture),
- evaluate the export approach and selection of target markets,
- propose recommendations concerning future orientations.

The case-study covers a presentation (37 slides) with the solution adopted by the company. It is recommended to show the presentation after the written and/or oral presentation and discussion of the answers provided by the students. The teacher can also show images of the websites http://www.edouard-artzner.com... and http://www.feyel.com/ so that the students can become familiar with the Feyel-Artzner company and visualise the different products.
