Résumé

The case addresses one of the greatest environmental disasters in history, discussing different elements that contributed to the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska. Back in March 1989, the 987-feet vessel crashed into a reef in Prince William Sound. While the captain of the Exxon Valdez was accused of commanding it under the influence of alcohol (in addition to having delegated its piloting to an unprepared sailor), the incident appears to be the result of a long chain of negligence, both by the public authorities and the company that owns the ship. In addition to the possible causes of the oil spill, the case also focuses on the unpreparedness of the teams that were supposed to work on repairing the damage, which not only made the control of harms slower, but also costly and inefficient.
